She participated in almost all major sea battles since its entry into US Navy service in WWII. After the surrender of Japan she entered Tokyo Bay as the flagship of the 3rd fleet. It is well known that the instrument of Japanese surrender was signed on her deck. After the war the Iowa-class ships returned home and served as the training ships for new officers. When the Korean War commenced in 1950 the USS Missouri as well as four previously mothballed ships were back in service. In 1951 she bombarded Wonsan supporting the landing operation of US troops on the Korean peninsula. In the Vietnam War three Iowa-class ship including the USS Missouri remained in mothballs with only the USS New Jersey remaining in service. In 1980 the Reagan administration ordered the reactivation of the Iowa-class battleships under the project of the defense buildup of US naval forces. The USS Missouri was modernized and reentered service in July 1986 with Harpoon & Tomahawk missiles and cutting-edge electronic equipment.
